In the fourth film in François Truffaut's quasi-autobiographical series, Antoine Doinel is trying to settle down into adult life with mixed results. He is doing odd jobs and has married Christine, the young violinist that he was courting in 'Baisers volés'. Soon, Antoine happens upon a new job in a major firm, and Christine gives birth. But then, Antoine falls in love with a young Japanese girl. When Christine discovers that Antoine has a lover, they separate, only to realise that they still love each other.
