Flatbed open
Open flatbed trailers are among the most popular trailers used for freight shippings. The ‘open’ refers to the top of the trailer, which is open and can be covered with a tarp. The flatbed refers to the bed of the trailer, which can be equipped with sides and closed from the back. Open flatbed trailers are commonly used to transport building material and tools, but also many different granular materials such as sand, clay, and gravel.
Loading and unloading efficientlyThe open flatbed commonly has closed sides and a closed back: whatever is inside will not be moved during the transport. Loading and unloading is efficiently done in an open flatbed trailer and in most cases, a forklift is used in this process. A tarp can be used to protect the load from weather conditions. Not all open flatbed trailers have sides and a back that opens and closes: large car trailers are often seen without. These trailers are a good fit for transporting large machines that can be tied to the bed.
MaterialsMost open flatbed trailers are made from steel or aluminum or from a steel/aluminum combination. The advantage of aluminum is its resistance against rust and corrosion, besides the fact that it’s lighter than steel and therefore fuel-saving. Steel flatbed trailers also need more maintenance than aluminum trailers and are therefore decreasing in popularity. The weight of the open flatbed differs: they go from a lightweight 3,500 kg to a massive 32,000 kg. Depending on the job that needs to be done, there certainly is an open flatbed trailer for all tasks.
